BBC Doctor Who Star Wants to Expand on His Character

It took some doing to be accepted in the iconic role of "Doctor Who," but Matt Smith has been a hit and now wants to riff on his character a bit.Matt Smith has successfully taken over as "Doctor Who" on the show that bears his character?s name. He?s been accepted by fans, and has come into his own in the role, but there is still more he wants to accomplish in this ongoing project. He said at a recent interview at Comic-Con, "I?m not nearly as cool as the doctor. I wish I was as cool as him, but it?s like, Amy Pond is way cooler than Karen." Smith referred to Karen Gillian, who plays the role of Amy Pond on the popular TV show.

Smith was speaking at the comic conference and show on a panel with Gillian and executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis, as well as screenwriter Toby Whithouse. He didn?t give much away in terms of what will be upcoming on the show, though he did note that a number of issues that were left unresolved during the last season will be resolved in the upcoming season. The cast also discussed a variety of issues that are of interest to the show?s fans.

Asked about the fez that is such an integral prop in the show, Smith noted, "That was me bleating on to (executive producer) Steven Moffat that I wanted to wear a hat, so he gave me the most stupid hat possible." Smith also offered his opinion on his character?s personality, noting, "There?s a lot of blood on the doctor?s hands, and I think that?s why he?s always so bubbly, because he has to keep going." Smith also said he looked forward to digging deeper into the dark side of his character, and wanted to expand that element of his personality.
