Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, has set the new domestic and global box office records for gross ticket sales through its opening weekend. From the anticipation, to the great reviews to the high ticket prices for 3-D showings, the final installment of the Harry Potter series is creating the perfect storm for record-shattering box office sales. Prior to Potter, The Dark Knight held the opening weekend record - and, to be fair, The Dark Knight actually sold a few more tickets. But with 3-D and IMAX ticketing as well as the fervor of fans who have waited for a decade to see the finale of J.K. Rowling's brilliant epic hit the screen, the final Potter was going to be hugely successful under any circumstances. And as if film-makers were magically able to save the best for last, critics are nearly unanimous that The Deathly Hallows, Part 2 is the best film of the entire series and there has been little negative to say about the performances of the film's stars. Cast when they were just 10 and 11 years old, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have literally grown up on the big screen. They grew in their characters as the story was told through the years, a phenomenon that was also a new experience for movie-goers.
As the story draws to a close, the final Harry Potter film is set to shatter the $1 billion mark in worldwide sales - and will likely end closer to $2 billion after all is said and done. And even though the film series is finally over, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter will live on in various forms of merchandising, including major theme parks, action figures and, almost certainly, various animated versions of the story.
